The
past few weeks have been crazy for people that use Wordpress for their
websites. In case you've been under a rock, you've most likely seen the
blog stories about the latest round of "brute force" attacks on
WordPress sites. In a nutshell, hackers are targeting Wordpress login pages and
looking for easy ways to access your site(s).
They look for simple-to-crack passwords. They look for users
setup as "admin". And they look for easy backdoor access to your site
through old versions of WP and vulnerable themes and plugins.
I've personally had several sites hacked in the past and it is
NO FUN! I've also seen many post Facebook and in forums in the past few weeks
of others facing hacked sites.
If you run WP sites and you haven't been hacked...consider
yourself lucky! It can literally take days and hundreds of dollars (if
not more) to get your site back to legit status.
To make sure our sites are locked down security, I've asked
my staff this week to install and start using SecureScanPro. It's a simple to install plugin that scans your site and makes sure it
is as secure as possible.
This really handy plugin will:
- Run tests and fix vulnerabilities on your WP site!
- Protect your login pages against bruce
force attacks- Log the IP addresses of attackers and ban them
from your site
- Checks core WP files for problems
- Schedule future scans and checks
- Plus much more!
No matter if you run WordPress sites for your own business or
you build websites for others, it is vital that you have a plan in place to
check and secure your sites.
As a matter-a-fact, if you build or manage websites for
clients, right now is an excellent opportunity to reach out to them about this
issue and charge them to secure their site.
Remember, "A once of prevention is worth a pound of
cure." This is definitely true this case!
